Mental Health & Pornography - 5 Steps to Quit
Welcome to the 1st Edition of the Brain Battery Recharge Newsletter!
Having a healthy mind is just as important as having a healthy body- and you're making a phenomenal choice in reading my newsletter.
Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it often gets overlooked.
It affects how we feel, think, and behave on a daily basis, and can have a big impact on our overall well-being!
Unfortunately, many of us don't take the time to take care of our mental health in the same way that we take care of our physical health.
That's why I want to stress the importance of taking care of our mental health, and how it can be affected by something as simple as what we choose to watch.
One of the most overlooked "silent" destroyers of our mental health is...
Watching pornography.
While it may seem like a harmless way to pass the time, consuming pornography can have a big impact on our mental well-being.
It has been clinically shown to lead to feelings of:
Guilt
Shame
Low Self-Esteem
Low Self-Worth
Anxiety
Depression
And much more!
I know that it can be difficult to quit something that we've become accustomed to, but trust me, it's worth it.
I myself struggled with porn addiction for quite some time... and breaking the cycle has made me:
More fulfilled in my relationships
More confident
Less socially anxious
Full of vitality
By taking care of our mental health and making the conscious decision to quit watching pornography, we can improve our overall well-being. Both physical and mental.
But I won't leave you with just that... here is a 5 Step Action Plan that I personally used to quit my addiction:
Step 1:
Set Specific Goals
Determine why you want to quit pornography and set specific goals for yourself. This might include improving your relationships, reducing feelings of shame or guilt, or improving your overall health and well-being.
These should:
Be precise!
Be expressed in positive language!
Start with an action verb to ensure they are focused on something that can be achieved
Step 2:
Seek Support
Quitting pornography can be difficult, so it's important to seek support from friends, family, or a professional counselor. They can help you to understand the root causes of your pornography use and provide guidance and encouragement as you work towards your goals. Be sure to speak to people that have your best interests at heart and will not try to shame you for wanting to be better.
Step 3:
Find Healthy Ways to Cope With Stress and Negative Emotions
Pornography can often be used to cope with stress or negative emotions. Instead of turning to pornography, try finding healthy ways to deal with these feelings, such as exercising, talking to a friend, or practicing relaxation techniques. All of these have benefits way beyond just stopping porn consumption!
Step 4:
Identify & Avoid Triggers
Think about what triggers your pornography use and try to avoid these triggers as much as possible. For example, if you tend to watch pornography late at night when you're feeling lonely, try finding alternative ways to cope with loneliness, such as calling a friend or reading a book. This step can undoubtedly be the hardest as porn triggers can be far and wide- especially dependent on your hormone levels.
Step 5:
Stay Accountable
Consider sharing your goals with someone you trust, such as a friend or a professional counselor. This can help to hold you accountable and provide a sense of support and encouragement as you work towards quitting pornography. Not to mention- feel free to use me as an accountability tool! I will happily keep you honest and to your goals. Just @ me in a tweet- or DM me!
Most importantly, please remember this:
We are in this together. Do no allow minor setbacks to deter you from your final mission. Relapses may occur, but it is how you handle those relapses and bounce back that will truly set you up for success.
